How did nationalism play a role in sparking World War I? Serbia gained independence from the Ottoman Empire. Slavs ruled by Austria-Hungary wanted their own country. Belgians in Belgium wanted to unite with Belgians in Germany. Belgians held off German troops for two weeks.
