Oh, alright. Well, first, do you know the substitution rules?

I think she's trying to find substitution. I know how to solve it, but I can't really explain it in words.

ShadowOfDeath:

I'm going to write an example on a whiteboard and solve it.

Is your answer able to be a decimal? Or does it have to be a whole number?

I'm sorry, but I'm lost on how to do this. It's been a while since I have.

Joe348:

substitute \[-3x+5 \] for y in the equation \[5x-4y=-3\] \[5x-4(-3x+5)=-3\] \[17x-20=-3\] \[17x=17\] \[x=1\]

Joe348:

substitute 1 for x in the equation y=-3x+5 \[y=(-3)(1)+5\] \[y=2\]

Joe348:

\[x=1 \] \[y=2\]
