In pea plants, the gene for the color of the seed has two alleles. In the Punnett square shown below, the dominant allele (Y) represents yellow and the recessive allele (y) represents green. Punnett Square showing a grid that is blank with 4 empty boxes, two columns and two rows. The female parent plant across the horizontal side, top, of the grid indicates a yellow phenotype and a genotype of Yy. The male parent plant along the vertical side of the grid indicates a yellow phenotype and a genotype of YY. Based on the Punnett square, what percentage of offspring would have genotype YY? 0% 25% 50% 100%
square
well what do you know so far
This is one of those assignments where I do not know anything about the lesson yet. I know I am fixing to learn about traits/cloning/etc.
No.
Alright, so it's much easier then it looks. Let me explain.
Okay.
|dw:1646326004672:dw| See how there is Yy at the top of the square well you have to move it down and put it in the 2 squares below and same with the little y. then on the sides you move the Y's to the right and put them in the squares
Here are some things that should help you.
So, would the percentage be 25% since there is 4 squares?
|dw:1646326484147:dw|
each square is 25%
Well, think of it like fractions.
okay thank you
i got it wrong ._.
It's not 25%.
think of each square as 1/4
o
if there are two that's filled, that's 2/4
2/4 as a percentage is?
the answer was 50% bc 2 squares have YY
See, let me explain this thoroughly first.
according to this, this is how you fill a punnett square.
Y (uppercase) is dominant, and y (lowercase) is recessive.

The female parent plant across the horizontal side, top, of the grid indicates a yellow phenotype and a genotype of "Yy." The male parent plant along the vertical side of the grid indicates a yellow phenotype and a genotype of "YY."
that's how we got YY at the top, and Yy on the side.
using those arrows, that's how you place the letters correctly the punnett square, essentially making the "phenotype"
there are two boxes filled in with YY, so it would be 50% because that is half of the punnett square (4 boxes, 2 filled 2/4 = 50%)
each square represents 25%, as @baconway said. just think of it like fractions, 1/4 for each box.
so the correct answer would have been 50%, not 25%. i think you got confused when baconway said that each box represented 25%, but it wasn't actually 25% percent itself. Do you understand?
