Chapter 1


“Bella! Bella!” I heard a familiar voice say as I awakened from my deep sleep. It's just something about those brick solid school desks that put me to sleep so fast. I heard the fire alarm ringing. Briiing! Briiing! Briiing! I was guessing it was another fire drill or somebody pulled the alarm again. I mean it has happened 6 times in the last month.

Where I live, we always have to do fire drills. It's literally mandatory. I go to California Preparatory academy(Cali Prep for short), but the famous nickname for our school is The Fire Hazard because it's the driest area around here. I live in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California where fires are an everyday thing. Just last week, a gas station blew up on Maple street because the ground was so dry. But that's another story for another time.

“Bella wake up, it's a fire!” I look up to see the love of my life, Lamar. I mean yea our relationship was toxic, and yea he broke my heart several times, but i loved him and i still do. And I just know that he still loves me too. We were each other's first love.

Lamar and I met on the first day of school at California College Preparatory School. It was my first day of junior high and Lamar had showed me around. Man when I tell you I was so lost. He showed me to all of my classes and introduced me to his friends. We had the same lunch period, so I sat with him. We’re in our junior year now.

“Did somebody pull the alarm again?” I ask as I get up.

“Bruh, No it's for real this time. Bella wake up,” Lamar says.

“I'm up! I'm up! Jeez,” I say.

I get up and walk towards the door but as I reach for the knob I can feel the heat coming off of it. So I tried the other door but that door was hot too.

“Bella, it's not going to work. Now we’re both stuck because I came back to save your Cheese.”

“You didn’t have to.”

“But i did”

“Why,” I say as I try to open the window from the second floor.

“Because I love you Bella and I don't want anything bad to happen to you. But this is what I get for letting my emotions get the best of me. Now I'm gonna die. No, we’re gonna die.”

I manage to open the window enough to fit my body through.

“Lemar! Shut up ranting and raving and listen to me. We’re gonna have to jump.”

“Aw hell nah now I'm really gonna die. What you think im white? Black people don't just go jumping out of windows,” he says pacing back and forth like he actually has a choice.
“Okay then die.”

I get ready to jump out of the window but I feel Lemar grab my arm. I look up at him.

“Bella, wait let me go first,” he says.
See here he goes again being a selfish stuck up prick like he’s always been. He just wants to save his own life and the real reason he came back for me is not because loves me, It's because he loves being loved by me. I'm the only one in this entire school that will put up with his sorry behind.

“Bruh really? In a time like this you’re putting yourself first? People never really change do they?” I say not really asking a question, it's more like a statement but of course knowing him he’ll answer a question that's not meant to be answered.

“Bella people do change and I’m not putting myself first…. Well not really. I Just wanna go first so when you jump I’ll be there to break your fall.”

“What's the catch Lemar?”

“There is no catch. Like I said `mi amor I really care about you.”

I rolled my eyes but I let him go first. As I watch him jump out of the window I can see a bunch of kids crowding around underneath the window. I hear sirens and see flashing lights. The news channels are here. That's new because that never really happens. I jump out of the window and I kind of do a roll so I won't break every muscle in my body by trying to land on my feet. Lemar helped me up as I dusted myself off.

And all of this was just the beginning.










Chapter 2

Everybody was calling their parents and friends to come pick them up. Some people had cars so they could just drive off the parking lot. I called my mom so she could pick me up, but she never answered. I kept calling her tho. She finally picked up the phone.

“What do you want bella you know i'm at work,” she said

I rolled my eyes because who answers the phone like that.

“ My school caught on fire and I need a ride home.”

“I can't pick you up Bella, I'm at work so youre gonna have to find a different way to get there. Get an uber or something, I’ll give you the money back.”

She never pays me back so that wasn't going to happen and I don't even know why I called her because I can never count on her.

“Okay, I’ll just see if somebody else can take me home. And I might call off work because this is a lot.”

I work at The Build-A-Bear Workshop in the mall every day after school. I started working there because of Lemar. His big brother worked there and they needed more staff. Lemar told him I was good with kids, since they get a lot of kids that come in there.

“Ok so that means you shouldnt be late getting home. And when you get home you need to do your homework”

“Yes ma’am”

Click. I hung up the phone and stood on the sidewalk thinking about what I should do. But before I can even look up the location for the uber, Lemar is walking my way. He was over there talking to his friends and stuff.

“Hey, Bella,” he says.

“Hey, Lemar. What do you want?”

“Damn, why I always gotta want something. I was coming to see if you needed a ride.”

“To be honest…” I got cut off because I looked up to see this fine, brown skinned boy walking towards us.
“Whats up bro,” he said as he shook hands with Lemar.


Eughh!! Of course he’s friends with Lemar. I rolled my eyes.

“How do you know Lemar?”

“This my homie, bro. This is my brother for real, for real,” Lemar said. “But bella what was you about to say?”

“Huh,” I said, “What was I about to say? I kind of forgot to be honest.”

“You said something about “to be honest” but then you got cut off”

“Oh yea! I was about to say, to be honest you can introduce me to your friend and he can drive us both home. Because your car is being towed,” I pointed to his car on the other side of the street, parked illegally.

“Oh shi….” He ran towards his car screaming,” Hey! Heyy! That's my car! Do you know who I am ?!”

Me and Lemar’s friend laughed.

“Hi, I’m Jaylen,” He says.

He sounds so… I don't know. He just has a beautiful voice.

“Hi, I’m Bella.”

“That's a cute name. Since Lemar’s car is getting towed then I guess I can give you a ride home,” he says.

“Um, that's ok. I’ll just get an Uber,” I say.

“Please. I insist.” Wow, this guy is too nice. He must be gay or something because its too good to be true.

“Ok I guess you can give me a ride, but what about Lemar?”

“I don't think we’ll have to worry about that,” he says, pointing to a black Nissan. It's Lemar’s mom and she’s yelling at him about the car. I can't really hear what she’s saying but I know its about the car.

“Yea but how do I know you’re not a serial killer or something. I value my life sir,” I say jokingly.
He laughs a little bit,” Yea I’m a serial killer and I have a bunch of people in my basement.”

I laugh,” Funny but that's a joke right?”

“Yes, it's a joke Bella,” he smiles, “C’mon Bella, my car is over here.”

He leads me to a black Dodge Challenger. This just keeps getting better and better. He opens the passenger door for me. I get in the car and look around. His car is nice, clean, and neat. I like this dude for real. He closes the door and walks to the other side of the car and gets in. He looks over at me.

I look at him and smile, “ What?”

“Nothing,” he smiles and starts the car, “So where to?”

“Home, obviously but I’m guessing you dont know where that is. Just go down Main street until you reach the third stop light, then turn left. That's my street.”

“Alrighty.” He pulls out of the school’s parking lot and starts driving down the street.

I made him drop me off three houses down from mine. I never give anybody my address and the only person that knows it is my two best friends, Hope and Natalie, and Lemar. I text Ms. Johnson, the elderly woman that lives in the house I'm being dropped off at, to tell her that there's someone new dropping me off today so she wont get scared or anything.

We pull up to the house and as I'm putting my purse he gets out of the car so he can open the door for me. When I get out of the car he’s standing very close to me and he just stares at me for a little while. He has some pretty hazel eyes. He finally moves so i can start walking.

“Bella, wait. Can I have your number so i can text you sometime or if you need another ride because Lemar isn't getting that caer back anytime soon.”

“Yea.” We exchange phones so we can put our numbers in. When he hands me back my phone I look at it.

“Bye bella. I’ll text you,” he says as he pulls off.

I stand there for a little bit trying to understand what just happened because somebody that cute is flirting with me. Or is he flirting? I wouldn't know because boys are always sending mixed signals. I think they don't even know what they want for real because they could flirt with you one day and then the next tell you they have a girlfriend.

Ms. Johnson is watching me out of her door. She opened the door to talk to me. She’s my favorite person in this whole neighborhood.

“He’s a handsome young man, Bella. And he’s a gentleman the way he opened the door for you. I like him.”

“Me too, Ms Johnson. Me too,” I say as I start walking towards my house.

I unlock the door to find the house empty. I look at the clock and its only 12:30. My sisters dont get out of school until 3:00 and my mom gets home at 5:00. I’m going to take advantage of this time so I go to the kitchen and grab a snack. When I go back to my room I turn on the T.V and take a nap.



























Chapter 3

I’m walking through the mall with my best friends, Hope and Natalie, when we see Jaylen at the food court. I have on black ripped jeans, black and yellow checkered crop top, and some black and yellow air forces. He’s walking towards me so fast and smiling. He hugs me so tight like he hasn't seen me in months. He pulls away from the hug and kisses me and at this point it feels like we’re the only two people in the room. I look around and my best friends arent there anymore and now me and Jaylen are in my living room.

“Why are you looking at me like that bella? Is everything okay?”

“Yes everythings fine,” I say.

He kisses me again and we sit on the couch. He rubs on my thigh as he kisses me. He stops kissing me and looks at me.

“What?” I ask

“Nothing you’re just so beautiful,” He says as kisses me again.

My little sister, Adrianna, walks in and just stares at us.

“Bella, make me a snack. Bella! Bella!”


“Bella wake up,” my little sister says as she shakes me.

“Oh my gosh bro what do you want?” Its always her waking me up like this.

“I want a snack”

“You are 13 years old and you cant make your own snack?”

“I cant reach the animal crackers genius and Mom told me to stop standing on chairs so you have to get it for me,” she says.

“Bruh why didnt you ask Naomi? I swear yall are so annoying,” I say as I get up so i can get her snack.

I get Adrianna her snack so she can leave me alone.
“Where's Niaomi?” I ask

“I don't know. Probably in the room on her phone,” Adrianna says, sounding like she has an attitude. I'm not even going to ask because she's always like this.

I get a notification so I check my phone again, and it's a message from Jaylen. I walk to my room, shut the door, and sit down on my bed as I text Jaylen back.

Ofc I texted you. Why wouldn't I?

Idk. I guess i've had too many ppl disappoint me

Well I won't disappoint you. Trust me.

Bella
Lol ok and you made an appearance in my dream when i took a nap

Oh really? What was it about, like what was I doing in your dream?

Bella
Kinda forgot. All I remember is we were at the mall with my friends.

Jaylen
Mhm ok. Well i had a dream about you
And in my dream i asked you out on a date and you said yes
Oh wait look it's happening irl

Are you asking me out?

Jaylen
Yes. Will you go on a date with me Bella?

Bella
Mmm idk. Where will you take me?

Jaylen
Wherever you wanna go. Just say yes pls so i wont feel stupid

Cool, cool. I’ll pick you up tomorrow at 1. I mean if that's a good time for u.

Bella
Yea i’ll be ready. But what should I wear?

Jaylen
Wear whatever you want. Probably something casual.

Bella
Ok good because that's all I really got is casual clothes.
I don't really dress up that much.

I stare at the ceiling in disbelief because no way this is happening to me. He’s so cute and sweet. I like the vibes I get from him. No way he likes me, out of all the pretty people at that school and he likes me. This is all just crazy to me. He has to have some flaws of some kind because this guy is just too perfect.
