IDENTIFY: Romeo and Juliet is a play that deals with serious and tragic events, yet Shakespeare does weave jokes and comical situations into Act I. One example is the conversation amoud the servants at the beginning of Scene 5. Identify another example of humor in Act I.

A lot of the exchanges between Romeo and Mercurio have wordplay/humor/ or a generally humorous tone about them. Romeo Give me a torch; I am not for this ambling. Being but heavy, I will bear the light. (Making a pun between Romeo feeling sad/heavy, and carrying a torch (“light” like the opposite of heavy) Mercutio Nay, gentle Romeo, we must have you dance. Romeo Not I, believe me. You have dancing shoes With nimble soles. I have a soul of lead So stakes me to the ground I cannot move.
