Seeing that there's parenthesis in this, you would start off by solving the parenthesis

Ok
Sailor:
Once you simplify the 1+2 in the parenthesis, you would then distribute 2 to whatever is in the parenthesis.
When you divide a negative number by a positive number, it usually results in a negative number. In order to be able to simplify the left side of the equation you would first need to find the reciprocal of 1/3. So basically, you could end up setting up something like this for the left side:
\[\frac{ -3 }{ 1 } \div \frac{ 3 }{ 1 }\]

Ok.
Sailor:
When you do that equation, then add 1. Considering that it's a negative number as the result, you would need to remember that positive and negative numbers always cancel each other out.

Ok.
Sailor:
So basically there would be -8=6
I assume you have to divide these?
JordynTheAlien:
I just did it. So what I did was -3 divided by 1(3)+1 then that would be -8. Then I did -8 divided by 2 (1+2) And I got -12.
Sailor:
So does the answer need to be a fraction, decimal, or a whole number? When I distributed 2 into the parenthesis, I got 2+4, which adds up to 6. Then I divided -8 by 6 and I got a fraction, which was -4/3
JordynTheAlien:
I think it needs to be negative idk.

You said you got -12 after distributing. With -3 divided by 1/3, you did it right. How exactly did you solve the equation in the parenthesis?
JordynTheAlien:
I just did -3 divided by 1 (3) +1 then I got -8. But then I did -8 divided by 2 (1+2) Then I had gotten -12.
Sailor:
Oh ok, I see what you did now.
