Jenna18:

You are to write an essay on this question: When can the way we look at things lead to growth--and when can it hold us back? Any thoughts ?

SmokeyBrown:

When we write essays, it's usually a good idea to make sure we first understand the question so you can figure out how we want to form our response. In this case, we have a prompt that asks about growth and the opposite of growth, and how these states can be affected by our perspective--the way we look at things. Since the prompt asks us to compare two opposing forces, this suggests one possibility for the structure of the essay; after introducing the topic of the essay, perhaps you can start by talking about the kind of perspectives or mind-sets that lead to growth, then contrast by talking about the kind of perspectives that can hold someone back from growth, or vice-versa. That's certainly not the only way to structure an essay like this, but it is one that could make sense. Perhaps it would be easier to start by thinking about the content of your essay and letting that shape the structure--the content is more important, after all, so we want the organization to build around the ideas, rather than the other way around. My advice would be to think about examples you've experienced or seen for yourself, and draw on that knowledge for inspiration. Can you think of a time that you or people you know of were able to grow because of the way they looked at things? What about an example of someone being held back because of their perspective? You may want to consider what "growth" and "being held back" mean to you when trying to think of ideas. In general, if you write from what you know and believe in, your writing will be more natural and compelling I hope this gives you a place to start from, at least. I'll try to check in later to see how things are going :)
