What was a main goal of the Panama Canal?

Ships would have to sail all the way around South America to deliver goods to other countries, which was a pain in the butt to say the least. This cost them tons of fuel and time and they wanted to do it faster. So, they decided to create the Panama Canal, a waterway that cut straight through a "tiny" stretch of land so they could save tons of time instead of going all the way around..
