Why did some Americans reject Imperialism?

Many Americans rejected this idea for several reasons, there isn't really a clear answer.

It's inhumane
With so much land and such a small military, it would be too difficult and too risky to control everything

It would lead to future wars

The non-imperialists were objected/conflicted against the development because they considered imperialism contradicted the republican ethos, particularly the necessity for "consent of the people." Some organizations, like the American Pro government League, fought imperialist here on grounds that it contradicted Republican ideals and the "social contract."

Also it's kind of ironic, Americans decided to take their land from the Native Americans, which is pretty much Imperialism.
