People from all over the South wrote letters to the government protesting the Indian Removal Act. President Jackson ordered the military to arrest people, including missionaries who tried to help the Cherokees. They were thrown into military and civil jails. Two missionaries working among the Cherokees were sentenced to four years in jail.

Their cases were appealed all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States. Attorneys argued that the Cherokees had lived on the land before the white man had ever come to the Americas. Furthermore, the Cherokees had their own written language, thanks to Sequoya. The Cherokees and their friends were being persecuted unfairly, they insisted. It was up to the Court to defend their rights.
