The Doll
These events took place in 1965.

Hi my name is Rayla, i live with my twin brother and my two parents. I have long dirty blonde hair and blueish green eyes. Percy has blonde hair and green eyes, like my father. My mother has dark brown hair and blue eyes.

As my brother and I were running in the woods I tripped, landing face-first onto the ground.
“Rayla? Are you okay?” My brother had asked
“Yeah.. I just tripped over something…”
I looked around trying to find what I tripped over but all I could see were tree branches and roots. I thought nothing of it and got up, but as soon as my brother helped me up I saw what looked like a doll.
“Percy, look at this,” I said holding up the doll
“Where do you think it’s from?” Percy asked
I shrugged my shoulders and walked home with the doll.
Later that evening my mother asked me where we had found it.
“We found it in the woods. We were playing and Rayla tripped over it.” Percy said
“Yeah, but I can’t seem to remember how though. It wasn’t in front of me, I would have seen it, I mean it was very bright out.” I said, stabbing my roast.
“Don’t get your head up in a twist, Ray. It could have been there and you could’ve missed it while you were running.” Mother said. “Now eat your roast.”
Throughout the night, I was thinking about the doll. Percy told me to just give it to one of the children in the village but I couldn’t do that until I found out who it belonged to.
In the morning I woke up and found the doll at the foot of my bed. I screamed when I saw it. Mother came running.
“What’s wrong Ray?! Is someone here?!” She said looking around. I pointed at the doll, my hand was shaking so much.
“It’s going to be okay hun don’t worry.” My mom said, walking to me and giving me a hug. Percy got out of bed after mom and repeated that he didn’t put the doll there.
“I know Percy, I’m not blaming you,” I said
My mom and Percy left the room so I could get dressed and help with the chores.
“Rayla, Percy I’m home!” my father called out
Mother told him I was in the barn taking care of the livestock. And Percy was delivering eggs to the neighbors. Father walked into the barn seeing me being surrounded by the animals.
“Hey, Ray,” Father said
I got up and hugged him. It had been 4 weeks since I saw him.
“Father! How was your trip?” I asked while I was locking up the animals into their pens.
“It was very eventful. I got you a new pair of flats to wear to church tomorrow.” He replied.
“Oh, father, that's wonderful!” I exclaimed.
“Now, I need your brother.” He said
“He is probably at Mr. and Mrs. John's house. They make cookies when they get the eggs from him. He stays so he gets them freshly baked.” I said
“I see,” Father said
“I’ll go get him, plus I want some cookies too,” I said smiling
“Well alright. Make sure you bring me some cookies too.” Father said laughing
I ran off to get Percy, but when I did I saw him standing there talking to Mrs. John
“Percy! What are you doing?” I yelled
Percy gave me a signal to come over there.
“Morning Mrs. John!” I said with a smile on my face
“Good morning Miss Rayla. What brings you here on this fine morning?” She said
“My father just got home from his trip and he wanted to give Percy a present. But he’s out here doin’ his egg route.” I said
“Oh well, Percy, I'll save you some cookies so you can go see your father.” Mrs. John said with a smile
“Thank you, Mrs. John!-” He said, then I smacked his arm. “Uhm, can my sister have some?”
“Yes of course! How about you guys come over after lunch and bake some cookies with me?” She said taking the eggs from Percy
“We’ll ask our mother if we can. Well, we have to get goin’ see ya later Mrs. John!” I said, grabbing Percy’s arm and running off to the house.
“Way to rush us,” Percy said with a frown
“Percy it’s been a month since we have seen Father! Don’t you want to see him?” I said staring at him
“Well yeah,” he said
“Good now let’s go! Father has something for you!” I exclaimed and ran to the house with Percy
“Pa!” Percy said hugging our father
“Hey, Percy. I got you something!” He said, handing him a box.
Percy hesitated when he grabbed the box.
“Well, what is it?” I said
Percy held up a ball and his face looked blank.
“Wow. thank ya pa.” He said with no emotion.
“How about we toss it outside?” Father asked
“He’s not finished with his chores Nigel.” mother said “Percy, and Ray go finish your chores.”
“Before we go and finish, can me and Percy go to Mrs. John’s house to bake cookies after lunch?” I asked
“We’ll see now go feed the animals.” mother said pointing to the barn
“Yes ma’am,” I said before I walked back to the barn
A few hours had passed and the doll was off my mind until my father sat it at the table. When I saw it I completely lost it. Father said he found it inside Percy and I’s room and thought it was cute because it looked like me.
“Father just get rid of it!” I said
“Rayla, I understand that you might not like it but you shouldn’t yell at your father.” Mother said
“Mother I-”
“Not another word. Sit down and eat. Then you can go bake cookies with Mrs. John. Now eat.” She said not even looking at me. I wanted to argue but Percy pulled me down to sit.
Later after lunch was over all I wanted was to get away from that doll.
“Come on Ray! Oh, and take the doll with us because we might be able to see who it belongs to.” Percy said, holding open his bag.
“Percy! No! I hate that thing, I'm not going to have it near me again.” I said crossing my arms
“Rayla. We need to get it to its owner so you don’t have to be around it.” Percy said, grabbing it and putting it in his bag. I rolled my eyes and took off running to Mrs. John’s house.
“Well good afternoon Miss Rayla.” Mrs. John said with a smile
“Hello, Mrs. John! Percy is on his way. He and I were runnin’ here.” I said taking a few big breaths.
“Rayla you cheater!” Percy said falling over trying to take breaths
“Percy you need exercise,” I said smiling
“Yeah, yeah I know,” Percy said getting up
“Well, you two are we gonna bake some cookies or not,” Mrs. John said with a big smile
“Yes ma’am!” I and Percy said with a grin
We walked in and greeted Mr. John as he was watching the television.
He waved and said “Good afternoon kids,”
I looked at the television and said, “What’s goin on in the news?”
He didn’t look at me at all and said “Just the president.”
“Oh..” I said looking down
“Let’s make cookies!” Percy said
“Calm down Percy. We gotta wait for Mrs. John.” I said
Percy frowned and sat on the couch waiting patiently for Mrs. John.
“Alrighty, kids let’s get the ingredients.” Mrs. John said, taking out the milk and stuff.
After the cookie baking, we sat down and ate. We took some to mother and father. We still didn’t find out who the doll belonged to.


Chapter 2
Don’t make her angry…
A few weeks had passed and I forgot about the doll. Percy hung out with his friends more, and I was alone.
“Ray you up?” Percy asked
“Can’t say if I am or I ain’t,” I said
“Ha-ha-ha. Funny.” Percy said getting out of bed
“Percy, go to bed! We need to be up very early in the morning.” I said
Percy still walked out of our bedroom door. I sighed and tried to fall asleep but then I heard a scream. I threw myself out of bed and ran out. So did my mother. My father came running a few moments later. Percy was nowhere to be seen.
“Percy!?” Mother screamed.
I stared at her with a terrified look. Father told me to phone the neighbors.
“No one has seen Percy..” I said
Father started to pace back and forth.
“Honey, calm down. We’ll find him.”
A few weeks passed and Percy was still missing. I did all of his chores, taking the eggs to the neighbors, washing the dishes, and cleaning our room. Then after that, I had to do my chores, feeding the animals, washing the animals, cleaning the barn, and mowing the lawn.
It was kinda fun seeing all of the neighbors, and seeing Percy’s friends.
“Hey, has Percy come home yet?” Percy’s friend Jackson asked
“U-um no… He’s still missing…” I said, handing him an egg carton.
“That’s too bad.” He said taking the carton
I nodded and was about to walk away but then he asked me if I wanted to hang out with him and Percy’s other friends.
“Sure! But, let me finish the chores.” I said smiling
“Okay, what time do you think you’ll be done?” He asked
“Twelve,” I said walking away to the next house.
I hung out with Percy’s friends until dinner, then I went home.
After dinner, I went to my room and saw the doll sitting on my chair in front of my vanity.
I hesitated, but then I grabbed it and threw it out the window. Then I turned around and saw it on my bed.
I grabbed it and yelled “What do you want!” tears streamed down my face.
“I miss my twin brother, this doll took my only friend, I have no friends,” I said, dropping the doll and crying.
I heard Percy’s voice for the first time in 2 weeks, I got so excited, I wiped my tears off my face and turned around hoping to see Percy, but it was the doll.
“Why can’t you just leave me alone!” I screamed.
“But you miss your brother…” The doll said creepily.
Chapter 3
The doll talks?!
I stared at the doll, I felt like I was going insane.
“W-what?” I said
“I know where your brother is.” The doll said
I started to freak out more. My hands were shaking a lot, I got up, took the doll, and sat it on my vanity.
“Alright ‘doll’ why are you tormenting me, why did you take my brother, and where is Percy?” I said trying to figure out what this doll wanted.
The doll said nothing. I got up, grabbed the doll and shoved it in my and Percy’s old toy box and went to bed.
The next morning I heard Percy’s voice, I ran out of my room and saw him hugging mother while she cried. My eyes widened with excitement.
“Percy!” I screamed
“Rayla. We need to talk,” he said with a very serious voice.
“Uh okay..” I said
Mother let him go and he walked into our room and shut the door. He started to hug me tightly.
“Percy, where'd you go?! The-”
“I don’t know where that doll took me...” He said
“Well, the doll can talk! She said she knew where you were.” I said
We talked about the doll, and how I hung out with his friends while he was gone. He wasn’t too happy about it but he was happy they asked about him. After everything that was happening, I was so glad to have my brother back.
The next morning we both did our chores together. I helped him with the dishes and the egg delivery.
“Uhm, this house?” I asked
“Yeah, I deliver here all the time,” he said
“I-I didn’t. I never saw this house before,” I said
“Oh well, we have extra eggs, I'll just give them the extra,” he said ringing the doorbell.
I shook my head. An elderly woman opened the door, I realized she looked like the doll.
“Good morning ma’am!” Percy said with a smile
“Morning Percy.” She said
I squinted trying to figure out why she looked like the doll.
“Oh who is this?” she asked staring at me
“Rayla Moon Nice to meet ya,” I said holding out my hand
“Well nice to meet you too Rayla,” she said shaking my hand
I smiled and whispered to Percy “We should get home,” he nodded and we walked home
“Did you notice that woman looked like the doll?!” I said
“Yeah but I’m still trying to figure out why..” he said
“Maybe the doll belongs to her?” I asked
“It could be hers.. Maybe we should take it to her?” He said
I nodded and ran home with him.

Chapter 4
The doll’s owner?
Me and Percy told our parents we wanted to do the egg delivery together, our parents agreed but said we had to split the money we got from it.
“Bye!” I said walking out the door with percy.
Percy had the doll in his bag and was ready to ask some questions. Once we got to the woman's house, I knocked on the door, and Percy grabbed his notepad and pencil.
“Well good morning kids.” She said
“Morning ma’am.” I said
“I didn’t know egg delivery was today.” She said with a smile.
“Uh it’s not. We have a question for you…” Me and percy said
“Okay, what is it?” she said nervously.
I took the doll out of Percy's bag and held it up to her.
“Do you recognize this doll ma’am?” I asked
She looked terrified of the doll, like she couldn’t get away fast enough.
“W-where’d you get that doll?!” She said freaking out
“I tripped over it in the woods. The doll has been torturing me and my brother ever since!” i said
“I-I got rid of it, so it could never do anything to anyone..” she said
“Ma’am, how can we make sure this doll cant do anything to anyone again.” percy said
“Well we can.. No that won't work…” she started to say
Me and Percy looked at each other then looked at her.
“Listen we want this doll to never torture people or hurt them again, so either you help us or we’ll do it our selfs.'' I said.
She stared at me and her eyes filled with tears.
“She took my family away, my only friend. I want to get rid of that doll as much as you do hun. B-but how?” She asked while wiping her tears away.
“Well how’d you do it the first time?” me and percy asked
“I uh, I don't remember it's been almost 7 years..” she said
Percy looked at me with disbelief. “So you're saying that you got rid of the doll 7 years ago and it's coming back now?” He said
“Well I have tried to get rid of it my whole life.” she said
“Ma’am-” I started
“Percy! Rayla!” Our mother called.
“We need to go, can we come back later this week?” I asked
The woman nodded and me and percy took off to the house.
“What were you doing?” mom asked
“Momma, we were having a talk with one of our neighbors.” Percy said
I twisted my shirt, while Percy talked with mom. Me and mom never got along, percy was her favorite and i was dad’s. Sure it was hard not being able to talk with mom without fighting or stuttering. She cares about me but we don't get along like she does with percy. I couldn’t think of anything to say to her while percy explained why we were out so long (he didn’t tell her about the doll)
“Honey I don't want you out so late with you missing for over 2 weeks. I can't imagine it happening again!” mom said to percy
I rolled my eyes and walked to me and percy’s room. Percy tried to follow but I shut the door behind me. He knocked on the door and said “Ray? Can I come in?”
“Please go away. I-I just want to be alone.” I said, wiping my tears off of my cheek.
I curled up on my bed and cried. I felt like it was all I could do. A few hours passed and I stopped crying and sat by the door and talked with percy. I told him how I felt. He acted like he understood but I knew he didn’t.
2 days passed and me and percy went to school, he hung out with his group of friends, and i just walked around trying to find something to do. Behind the school was this creek. I would sit at the creek for hours just watching the water flow. But this time there was a girl sitting where I used to sit.
“Hello.” I said sitting next to her.
“H-hi.” she said nervously.
She had beautiful long red hair in a braid, it wasn’t like an orangish red color it was actually red. When I saw her face, I was amazed, she was very beautiful. She had freckles and blue eyes with a brown place on the bottom of it.
“Hi, I'm Rayla.” i said with a smile
“I'm Morgan, nice to meet you Rayla.” she said slightly smiling
We both sat by the creek and talked about our family’s. She has a sister named Jackie. She doesn't have a mom or a dad and lives with her grandma.
“Wow. if you don't mind me asking, what happened to your mom and dad?”
“My mom passed away after having Jackie, my dad- well I don't know what happened to my dad.” she said nervously.
“It's alright.” i said
Just when I said that Percy came running to get me.
“Mom is ready to pick us up.” Percy said with a pause. “Hello! I'm Percy, Ray's brother.” He said smiling
“Hi, I'm Morgan..” she said shyly.
“Well i best be goin’ Bye morgan. See ya tomorrow?” I said
“See ya tomorrow Rayla.” she said with a smile.
I walked away, got into the car and went home. Percy was surprised I made a friend. So he told mom and dad. Both of them thought I had LOTS of friends. Guess how that turned out.
“Ray, is everything okay at school?” Mom asked
“I’m fine, it’s just I don't socialize with the other kids at school..” I said, twisting the bottom of my shirt.
“Sweetheart, you sure that's the case?” Dad asked
“Yes. Now please can we not talk about this?” I asked.
They nodded and started making dinner.
Percy looked at me with a concerned look, I just waved and said “I'm fine.”
As much as I loved my brother he just was too worried about me. I know how he feels but he can't just keep worrying about me all the time.



Chapter 5
Friends forever.
We finished dinner and after that we watched the Television. I went to bed early, so I could wake up early in the morning. My alarm clock went off, I smacked the snooze button and got up out of bed, waking Percy up from his “amazing dream”.
“Rayla, it's too early!” Percy said, pulling his blankets over his head.
“You didn’t have to wake up Percy, I had to wake up early so I could shower, and cook breakfast.” I said, grabbing my robe and towel.
Percy groaned and said “wake me up when you finished breakfast.”
I rolled my eyes and said “I always do.”
Twenty minutes later I got out of the shower, got dressed and made breakfast. I woke up mother and father so they could eat before Percy. Without getting percy, he got up and walked into the kitchen.
“Ray, why didn't you wake me up!” he whined
“Because mother and father need food too, knowing you, you would have taken everything.”
He went to argue but then sat down, while I sat his plate down.
“Thank you Rayla.” Father said, getting up and wiping his mouth. “It was very good.”
` “Yes, it was very good. What did you use?” Mother asked
“I used the bacon grease after I made the bacon and fried the hashbrowns with the grease. Then I made the eggs and toast.”
“Hey Ray, can we have waffles tomorrow?” Percy asked stuffing his face
“Uh.. Sure!” i said grabbing my plate and sitting down
After eating I grabbed my book bag and walked to school. Percy followed me but was talking with his friends. I made it to the school fifteen minutes before school started so I sat at the same creek and saw Morgan.
“Hi Morgan!” I said sitting down and taking my sketchbook and pencil out of my bag.
“Hello, Rayla.” she said picking up a tadpole and putting it in the water
I started to sketch Morgan and the surroundings. Once I finished sketching I heard the bell ring so I tore the page out and gave it to morgan and ran to class. I sat down as soon as the teacher started talking. I grabbed a paper from my bag and looked up at the teacher and started to sketch her. I was in the zone and didn’t notice she was calling me.
“Rayla!” She yelled
I looked up at her and saw everyone left.
“Were you asleep?” she asked
“No ma’am I was sketching…” I said as she grabbed my paper.
“Wow. This is very realistic. May I keep it?” She asked
“Uh, sure..” I grabbed my sketchbook and gave it to her.
She looked at me then at the book.
“Rayla. You made these?” she said with excitement
“Yes ma’am, I did one of the new girl, Morgan.” i said
She smiled and handed me my sketchbook. “These are very good. Have you thought about going to an art school or taking an art class here?” she asked
“No ma’am. I don’t want the school to cost too much money..” i said twisting my shirt
“Oh well, you totally should!” she said
I smiled and walked out of the classroom with my sketchbook clinched to my chest. Morgan was walking around the halls, she looked very confused.
“Morgan?” I said
“Oh hello.” she said, messing with a piece of paper.
“Are you lost?” I asked
“Yes.. Where is Mrs. Christians class?” She asked
“Right here.” I said smiling and pointing to the classroom I just came out off
She smiled and walked into the classroom.
I walked to my locker still holding my sketchbook, I saw Percy talking with his friends in front my locker.
“Percy please move, you infront of my locker.” I said in the kindest way possible.
“Sorry ray, we wanted to see your sketches I saw one of the sketches you did on the wall in Mrs. Christians classroom.” he said with his hand stretched out.
I rolled my eyes and gave him my sketchbook, all of his friends crowded around him, and started to “Ohh” and “Aww” everytime Percy turned the page.
Percy closed the book and handed it to me, he and his friends stared at me for a moment then the Lunch Bell rang. I opened my locker and put my bag inside along with my sketchbook.
I ran to the lunchroom and got in line. Feeling a little anxious, I started bouncing on the tips of my toes.
“Chicken Nuggets are next!!” I heard the lunch lady call out
I got to the front of the line very quickly, and got my tray.
“Hi miss Rayla. How are you today?” the lunch lady asked
“Hello Mrs. Lucy, I’m good.” I said
Mrs. Lucy smiled and gave me extra chicken nuggets as I walked by. Percy saw my tray and stared at me while stuffing his face with nuggets.
“Why are you staring at me?” i said
Percy pointed at my tray and said “You got extra nuggets! How do you get those!” he exclaimed
“By being kind to people. Try it sometime.” i said sitting down
Percy stole one of my nuggets and stuffed it in his mouth.
“Percy!” I quietly yelled at him trying not to cause a scene.
He laughed and said “You saw it coming, Ray.” and stuffed another one in his mouth.
