Huh. I actually never really thought about it, so I decided to look it up. TeX: a typesetting language (a language that controls how text is formatted) La: stands for the person who developed this particular language (Leslie B. Lamport) https://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/software/tex/index.html#texdocs Fun fact, the X is not the English letter X, it's the Greek letter chi, so it's really pronounced "tech" not "tex."
