The US voting system works by having the citizens vote for the candidates they want in office. And most of the time, the electorates (the ones who hold the electoral college spots) will go with what the state they represent are in. Each state varies with more or less electorates.

It's basically a group of people who've been chosen by the citizens in order to vote for the president and vice president. Campaign Finance Reform Laws is what finances electoral campaigns.
