Pt.1 Continue in comments Red and blue lights, sirens, caution tape. I’m doing everything I can to hold back the tears. My best friend was murdered. She lays still on the wet pavement, her face pale, her eyes open, her mouth open, almost as if she’s screaming. She’s gone, I say to myself. I turn away holding back the tears and I run. Full speed on the sidewalk. I run until I can't run any more. *** I wake up to my alarm clock going off. It’s four in the morning and I’m determined to find out who killed my best friend, but in order to do that, I’m going to need evidence. I got dressed. I put on a shirt with a red rose on the front, I grab a pair of jeans with laces down the side, and I throw on my hightops. I go into the kitchen and grab my water bottle, then I grab a pair of disposable gloves. I put them in my pocket and I grab my keys and head out the door. I drive to the scene and park along the side of the road. Someone else is here. A white car with black lines going through the middle. I get out of my car and the engine is still on. I walk over to the car. No one is in it. I walk over to where the scene was and there is stained blood on the floor from where she was laying. They must have moved her body by the time I left. I don’t remember much. I wasn’t with her when she was murdered, but I was one of the first people the police called. I see someone in the distance laying down on the sidewalk by the creek. I look at them from afar and they finally get up after a couple of minutes. I walk toward them cautiously. He’s a male. “Hey Amara!” he says to me. I stop in my tracks and I just stare at him. I’ve heard his voice before, but I can't quite place it. “Hello?” I ask in a questionable voice. I see him walking toward me and I stay still. I can make out who he is now. Lias. I walk up to him and smile. He smiles back. He was a friend of mine for a while now. Ever since fourth grade. His eyes are gray with a hint of green in them, he is tall and muscular. His smile is one in a million. I had a crush on him since sixth grade, and it never wore away. I just stare at him for a moment. He’s in his hoodie, the one that has a mountain on it. I love that hoodie. It looks really cute on him too. “Hi Lias,” I say to him as I’m staring into his eyes. “Hello Amara. It’s been awhile since we’ve met up. Would you maybe want to walk with me? “ “Uhm- yeah of course I would,” I say with a smile.

He chuckles and replies, “Okay, let’s walk then.” We start walking. He is walking really close to me. My heart is beating fast. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye I see something glimmering in the distance. “Lias, look.” I say pointing over to where the glimmering item is. I walk over to it. I’m shocked. It’s a blade. I put on my gloves and picked it up. It has blood on it. Darmie. It must be her blood. My best friend's blood on this knife. I fight the tears about to roll down my face, but Lias notices the frown forming on my face. He pulls me in for a hug. He smells like something musky. I put my arms around him and hugged him back. He places his head on my head. Since he’s taller that’s not a problem. He is gentle with me, like I’m glass and one wrong move could break me. “Hey. It’s going to be okay Amara,” he says in a soft gentle voice. I shake my head, and he hugs me tighter. I inhale deeply and something about him is so calming. “Hey, look at me,” he says. I look up at him. “I promise we will find out who did this together, okay?” “Okay. Thank you Lias,” I reply. He pulls back and wipes the tears off my face. I smile and I feel my face getting red. I turn away. “You’re so cute Amara. I've been meaning to tell you that,” he says turning my head to his direction. “I- thank you. I like you Lias. I really do. I wanted to tell you that for a while. I never got the chance to tell you,” I say smiling. He smiles and grabs my hand and pulls me in by the shirt and kisses me, his lips soft against mine. He’s so gentle. Before I know it, I’m kissing him back. He pulls back after a couple of seconds. Then he grabs me by the hand and walks back to the scene where Darmie was killed. I unlock my door, but he stops me. He points to his car and smiles. I walk over to him and smile. “Get in,” he says with a smile. I got into his car. His car is so clean. There were no spots on the floor, in the cupholders, or on the windows. Everything was perfect. Just like him. He turns the car on and kisses me one more time before he turns on the radio. We drove for what feels like forever, but it was so nice to just be in the car with him. He drops me off at the police station. I look at him confused. He points to the knife in my hands. I completely forgot I was holding that. I go up to the police station. I'm surprised they are open because it’s only been a couple of hours since I woke up. Apparently they open at six o’ clock. Which is good news for me. I open the door and walk in. An older man, maybe in his forties, is sitting behind the desk. I walk up to him and I tell him I found this over by the scene of Darmie Goodman. He looks at me confused, then he grabs gloves and takes it. “Thank you,” he said after a short period of time. I nod my head and walk back out the door. I go back to Lias’ car and open the passenger door.

“Welcome back,” he says with a tight smile. It’s one I’ve never seen before. “Thank you. I have to go back to the scene to get more evidence, if there is any,” I tell him. He looks away and he puts the car in drive. He is going fast enough to make my stomach hurt. “Can you slow down please?” I ask him politely. “Sorry, I didn’t realize I was going this fast.” “It’s okay, it’s just I don’t do curves and bumps very well. Especially not at fast speeds.” “Oh, sorry. I remember you telling me that. I just forgot about it.” “No worries.” He slows the car down and pulls over to the side of the road. I look at him confused. “What happened?” I ask him. “I just wanted to pull over to let your stomach settle.” “Thank you,” I say and I feel my face turn red. “It wasn’t much of a walk earlier.” “I know, and I’m sorry. I just need evidence. I have to find out who it was. Whoever it was killed my best friend, and they are going to pay for it. I look out the window and stare. I look at Lias and I smile. He is still looking at the road, but once I turn away I feel him looking at me. I quickly look over at him and smile. He smiles back and then looks back on the road. Something about him is so calming. He is so gentle, so kind, so sweet. It’s becoming dark. I didn’t realize how dark it’s gotten. The sun is almost gone. The dark blue of the night has taken over. The stars and the moon are out. The moon lights up the night sky. I look out my window and look up at the moon hoping Darmie will see me down here. All of a sudden, tears started rolling down my face. I try to stop them, but it’s not working. The car stops moving and Lias gets out of the car. He comes over to my side and opens the door. Suddenly I realize that we are already back at the crime scene. He opens the door for me and I step out. “Thank you,” I say. He must have noticed the tears on my face because he moves his hand up to my face and wipes them away gently with his thumb.

“It’s going to be okay Amara. I can promise you that. We will find out who did it. I promise,” he says to me softly. “I hope so.” He pulls me in and kisses me again. He’s so warm. I don’t want this night to end. He pulls away and looks into my eyes. Something in the woods makes me jump. Someone is out here. It’s not just us. “Lias. Did you hear that?” “Yeah, what was it?” “I don’t know, it sounded like someone stepped on a stick and it snapped.” Lias turns to where the sound came from. All of a sudden I see a black figure. It’s tall and skinny. A person. I grab Lias’s hand and I start to run. I stop when he pulls me back. “What are you doing Amara? If we run whoever that is wil be able to find us quicker.” “Lias, I have to get out of here. I have to go. They could be coming for me next.” “They probably aren’t coming for you. Calm down and take a deep breath.” I squeeze his hand tighter, afraid, scared, nervous. He looks back to where we saw the person earlier, and they are gone. I look around. I notice something moving by my car. “Lias,” I say. “Yeah?” “Look over at my car.” He looks over toward my car and stares at it for a minute. We are about four feet seven feet from my car. My heart is beating so fast I feel like I’m going to pass out. He looks back at me with tears in his eyes. “Lias, what’s wrong?” “I have to tell you something.” “Go ahead,” I say to him with a cautious tone. “My brother was the one who killed your best friend. He wanted her, but she didn’t want him, so he got mad, and put her in his truck and took her here. I’m so sorry Amara.” My eyes widen with every word. I’m stunned. Not in a good way though. “So, you’re telling me that your brother is responsible for my best friend's death?” “Yes, and I’m so sorry.” I step back away from him, and look him in the eyes. Something in the corner of my eye catches my attention. His brother is here. He’s holding a knife. He walks toward me with the knife in his hand. “I’m sorry,” Lias says to me. “What do you mean?” I say not taking my eyes off of his brother. I knew I was next. I just knew it. His brother is standing right in front of me. I stand my ground despite how scared I am right now. He raises the knife up to me. I closed my eyes, knowing this would be the end. “Stop, don’t you dare hurt her John,” I hear Lias say. I can sense the blade coming closer to me. “Watch out Amara!” I duck down and feel someone hit my side. I groan in pain. Lias. He’s trying to save me. I open my eyes to see Lias on top of his brother. “Amara, call the cops,” he says to me. I pull out my phone and call the police station. I tell them I found out who the murderer was and that he almost tried to kill me too. The operator says that they are on their way. Now we wait. … Sirens and lights come into view. Finally, I say to myself. The rush onto the scene and grab hold of Lias and pull him back to move him out of the way, then they pull his brother off the ground and take the knife from his hand. I hear the click of the handcuffs going onto John's wrist. Lias rushes over to me and wraps me in his arm. “I'm so sorry Amara. I really am.” “I forgive you. Thank you for saving me,” I say as my eyes fill up with tears. He hugs me tighter, and I groan. My side still hurts from the hit. “Sorry about that too, I tried to push you over so he couldn’t hurt you.” “It’s okay Lias. I promise.” I hug him tight, and I don’t let go. Lias watches his brother get escorted into the police car. He pulls me in for a kiss, and I kiss him back. We found out who the murderer was. Together.
