The museum was full of people. One could hardly
see the paintings. But Vincent had seen the paintings
every day for the past fifteen years. It was the people
that he liked to watch. He thought that Monet and
5 Picasso were good and nice, but what he found
beautiful was the curiosity of a child rummaging
through the museum halls—it always brought a smile
to his face.
He made his way through the people. He was on
10 his last rounds of the day. He had to make sure that no
one touched any of the paintings. If he were to spot any
suspicious behavior he would have to tell Carl, the
Security Supervisor. Carl was almost twenty years
younger than he.
15 “Winston, are you on your rounds? Or are you
standing around dreaming again?” Vincent heard from
the radio.
“No sir, doing my rounds, sir,” he called back into
the radio. Carl didn’t answer back. Carl didn’t like
20 Vincent. Vincent felt he did a good job, but Carl was
always on his case for one thing or another.
Vincent saw a young couple, and he stopped to
look at them.
“Excuse me sir, where is the bathroom?” Vincent
25 looked down and saw a young boy standing on the tips
of his feet. Vincent smiled at him.
“Right this way, young sir. How are you enjoying
your trip to the museum today?” Vincent started
walking and the boy, who must’ve been around eight,
30 followed.
“What?” The noise of the crowd made it difficult
to have a conversation in the museum.
“I said, how are you enjoying your trip to the
museum?” Vincent said louder.
35 “It’s OK. I come every week with my parents...
they changed where the bathrooms are,” the little boy
said. Vincent smiled. The bathrooms were not on his
route and although Carl was still mad at him for some
reason, he decided he would show the boy. It would
40 take him five minutes to walk to the bathrooms and
another five to get back to his route.
“How’s everything else then, Tim? ...how’s
school? Everything going good? Yes?” Vincent smiled
shyly as he looked down at the boy through his big
45 heavy glasses.
“It’s OK.” Tim looked at Vincent in a confused
manner.
“And Mom and Dad? How are they? They’re good
I hope,” Vincent said worriedly. He scratched his head
50 through his short white hair. Vincent was embarrassed
that he couldn’t think of anything that he felt would
interest Tim.
“Good, I guess. Busy with work. How did you
know my name?” Vincent and Tim entered a quiet part
55 of the museum. It was a walkway reserved for security
staff. Carl had told him previously not to let visitors
through there, but Vincent had forgotten all about that.
“Well, they want the best for you... and Lisa, you
know.” Vincent said more quietly now that they were
60 no longer bothered by the sounds of the crowd.
“How did you know my name?”
“Wha—what’s that?”
“My name, how’d you know it?”
“Oh, well, when you get to be working at a
65 museum for as long as I have, you pick up a few things
here and there. I see you here every week. I just kind
of picked up your name.” Vincent smiled, but Tim still
looked confused. Vincent nervously shifted his eyes
and said, “Well you know, they train us to do that, so
70 that we can be friendlier to visitors of the museum, and
all that.”
“Makes sense,” Tim said with a content
confidence. Vincent opened another door and they now
faced the bathrooms.
75 “Well, there you go, Tim. I’ll see you next week,
OK? If... if you ever need anything, you can tell me,
by the way... It was good talking to you, I really
enjoyed it.”
“OK.”
80 “...my name is Vincent by the way!”
“OK, bye Vincent.”
“Wait, Tim! Will you find your way back alright?”
“Yeah, I think so.”
“OK then... if you don’t, you can ask for me
85 through any of the security staff.”
“OK, thanks.” Vincent smiled as his eyes filled
with water. All he had in life was his family at the
museum.
