The east egg is where “old money” (people who inherited their wealth) live, and the west egg is where “new money” (people who earned their wealth live). So in writing your response to this question, you could talk about what “old money” is associated with (the history, culture, elitism/gatekeeping) as well as what that means for Gatsby (despite Gatsby’s wealth he will never be “old money” because he wasn’t born into wealth. So there’s the element of unattainability, feeling like an outsider, less than, etc.)
