Story time~~~ “Come on, Bryn. We have, like, maybe two minutes to get home!” Ayla said in a somewhat exasperated voice. I stopped and turned to Ayla. Ayla and I live together in a small cottage deep in the forest. We lived in a small township on the island of Bimini. Bimin is located only 50 miles from Miami. The island has about 2,000 people. Not bad compared to the population of the U.S.A or even Brazil. Now, that’s a big country. Ayla is my best friend, cousin, and roommate. We chose to come to this island after a trade school of which had shown us different islands. I took on the career of an international interpreter. Ayla took on the career of a nanny. Surprisingly, we both make a pretty good income. Another plus to my job is I can work from home, when the Internet decides to work. I am only seventeen years old but have a major in three foreign languages: French, Spanish, and Italian. I also have a bachelor’s degree in business and communications. Ayla is three years older and decided to not go to college, outside of the occasional college class during her high school years. Most people wouldn’t even notice we’re cousins. Ayla is pale and has blonde hair, meanwhile, I have black hair and Indian heritage. Our mothers are sisters but my mom was adopted. She lived in India before she immigrated to the United States to pursue her dream of being an artist. She was only 14 when she came to the United States. I often try to talk to her since she is so far away, she has returned to India after my father passed away a few years ago. People often downput her while she is here. Thankfully, she stayed until my high school graduation. I’m grateful for her everyday but it sometimes seems like my aunt Gwendolyn. She is Ayla’s mom and the best aunt ever. Before I could even remember, I called her Auntie Gwen. She is sweet yet fierce and has been through a lot. My grandmama, who is mom’s biological mother’s name is Amulya. She lived in India her whole life and only recently learned English. She has inspired me to become anything I want to be. As a girl of only eleven she was a seamstress. My grandmama named my mother Darcy an Americanized version of the name ‘Darzi’ which means tailor. It is originally pronounced “Dar-jee”, my mother gave me the middle name, Ka which means ‘brave’. I am currently also working on learning astrology and Hindu.

My coworkers whom I see very little often joke that I am the youngest interpreter, however, I did some research and the youngest female interpreter is a 16 year-old who worked with Lewis and Clark on their expedition. As I am thinking about the history of our family, I walk straight into a tree. Smack! Ayla turns to see me rubbing my head and glancing towards the tree. Then, she starts laughing uncontrollably until her face is beet red. “Cut it out, Tomato. I need to get home to work. Also, thanks for warning me!” I grumbled, furious at her. She stopped and looked at me as if I had grown a third ear or something. “Brynn, there’s trees everywhere, what was I gonna do about it? You should’ve been paying attention! Also, I am NOT a tomato.” She admonished me as if I was a child. This is what she did, admonished and admonished me endlessly. It can get tiring and discouraging but I still love her to death. Sometimes, I wonder if my parents wanted another child. My mom had to give birth to me by C-section. Although, I would think that is easier than pushing a baby out! Anyways, Ayla is my sister by heart. Her father left when she was three years old and Auntie Gwen has been able to practically raise us both. We had just reached our small cottage and I was glad. Our ‘driveway’ which wasn’t even a driveway basically, had no gravel and a bunch of trees. It is also a mile long, not exactly the best walk home. “Ayla, have you called the driveway company yet? We need to get a driveway in so Mama can come visit. Not to mention your boyfriend!” I said the last sentence in a sing-songy voice. Her boyfriend is Jared, a guy from Miami who works with a big company to cut down trees. I despise him because he is ruining the beautiful forest. Ayla turned and simply said, “I thought you don’t like him. You know the whole deforestation thing?” She seemed a tad angry with me. “Ayla, I dislike him at some points, however, he is your boyfriend. Remember, ‘sisters by heart, cousins by blood, friends forever’?” I replied lightly. Ayla and I have made up that quote long before we lived together. Ayla sighed and released a deep breath, I realized it as her calming technique. Oftentimes, she uses it when we get in our fights.
