So first you need to match the variables in order to add them up

So for the first equation you have 
$$1.3t^3+0.42t^2-24$$

And looking at the second equation, the variables do not match so you want to make them match so instead of  (8 – 18t + 0.6t2), it would be :

$$0t^3$$

$$-0.6t^2$$

$$18t$$
$$-8$$
