“Critical Analysis Outline of Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes” We all have personal traits, but some affect people differently. Each person plays apart in the book Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes, but the three characters I chose stand out to me. They all have different personal traits that affect the story. Sarah Brynes is extremely courageous, Mr. Byrnes is psychotic, Eric is very caring. Sarah Byrnes is extremely brave. She goes through her whole life lying about what really happened to her. She lives with someone who physically and emotionally abuses her. “Sarah Brynes starts to protest” (Crutcher 279). The text shows Sarah Brynes started to protest and stand up for herself. If no one believes her she wants to stand up for what really happened. She was strong enough to tell Eric she couldn’t stand going back to live with her dad instead of the hospital. Communicating what you really feel is a very brave thing to do. Sarah Brynes is extremely brave. She told the truth about what really happened to her. Mr. Byrnes is a psychotic character. He not only burned Sarah Brynes but also emotionally and physically abused her. Putting your child in extreme pain is one of the most psychotic things to do. “He used to tie me up. He wouldn’t let me eat. He locked me up sometimes” (Crutcher 278). The text shows what terrible things Mr. Byrnes would do to Sarah Brynes. He is a terrible person, hurting your own daughter, tying her up, and not letting her eat are all extremely disturbing. He deserves to stay in jail for the rest of his life because what he has done to Sarah Brynes is unforgivable. Mr. Byrnes is an extremely psychotic person. He hurt Sarah Brynes in disturbing ways no one should be hurt by. Eric is an insanely caring person. He does whatever it takes to help Sarah Brynes, He doesn’t judge people for their decisions, and he understands what Sarah is going through is hard. “I’d rather have her hate my guts and be safe than love me and be alone” (Crutcher 181). The text shows how Eric cares more about Sarah Brynes being safe than their friendship. Eric is an incredibly nice and caring person; he was always there for Sarah and supported her. He stayed overweight just so Sarah Brynes would still feel normal with him. Eric is very caring. He was always there for Sarah Brynes no matter what happened. Sarah Brynes is a very brave person; she stands up for what wrong things are happening and communicates how she doesn’t feel safe with her dad.
good or bad essay?
Good essay!
I think you have a good start to an essay. However, the descriptions of each character seem to be slightly repetitive. For example, you start off by mentioning how Sarah is brave for speaking out about what happened to her, but then continue, in the same paragraph, to mention how she is brave for speaking about what happened to her. Also, I think the sentences could be linked together in some areas, seeing as the details you provided are almost saying the same thing. Other than that, I think you have a pretty decent start to an essay, just needs a few tweaks (:
