jeff is making 2/3 of a recipe for spaghetti sauce. How much will he need of each ingredient below?

1 1/4 cup water
2 cups of tomato paste
3/4 teaspoon of oregano
4 1/2 teaspoons of salt

assuming the listed ingredients are for the whole recipe, he will need 2/3 of each ingredient quantity. for the mixed numbers like 1 and 1/4 there's a couple ways you could multiply.

1. you could convert the mixed number to an improper fraction, then multiply by 2/3 as you would normally. multiply the numerators, multiply the denominators, then the final product is (product of numerators) / (product of denominators).
2. you could split the mixed number into its whole number + fractional component. for example, 1 1/4 would split into 1 + 1/4. then you'd distribute (2/3)(1 + 1/4), multiply, then convert both fractions to the same denominator and add the fractions.
