what gave jefferson and the other signers of the declaration of independence the right to declare the colonies independence

I was looking and reading an article which I will post the link here....but if you read around the 3rd headline and down it gives examples of what it accomplished and talks about colonies independence and states independence, I would summarize it for you but I think it will do you better to get better examples and information straight from the text, I will also look for more articles as we speak.
