This information revealed that the government had not been truthful with the public about the level of U.S. involvement in the war. Its an Americans constitutional right to know what going on in there government. The right to vote on things such as keeping or hiding secret documents is not up to the public. so the new york times keeping Americans informed is important and it keeps the news out of trouble.

the first amendment pretty much protects all speech including hate speech because it gives everyone the right to share their opinions and beliefs.
