Which sentence contains a correctly used participial phrase? A Peering through the rain spattered window, the scenery appeared lush and verdant. B Camping by the lakeside, the cries of geese kept me awake. C Kicking the ball into the upper left-hand corner of the goal, the striker scored the winning goal. D After brushing on another stroke of fiery crimson, the canvas looked complete.

Thoughts? Remember that the participial phrase must be placed next to the noun being modified. Also check for dangling participles (participles that don’t have a noun they could logically modify.) For example, choice A doesn’t work. The scenery cannot be the thing peering out the window. Using the same logic for the other choices, can you eliminate misplaced and dangling modifiers to find the right choice?
