World War I was a global conflict that lasted from 1914 to 1918 and involved many of the world's major powers. The war was sparked by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary in 1914, and soon escalated into a brutal conflict marked by trench warfare and devastating casualties. In the United States, President Woodrow Wilson initially pursued a policy of isolationism and neutrality, but this changed after events such as the sinking of the Lusitania and the revelation of the Zimmerman Telegram, which suggested that Germany was trying to form an alliance with Mexico against the US. Wilson eventually entered the war on the side of the Allies, and after the war he proposed his famous 14 Points for achieving lasting peace and stability in Europe. One of these points was the creation of the League of Nations, a precursor to the United Nations. The war officially ended with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which imposed heavy penalties on Germany and helped set the stage for World War II.
