On a cold winter day, I went out into the city. I had nothing on but jeans and a thick coat. A stranger passed me by, but not without a considerable pause. I stopped by the fountain and I sat down. While I was lamenting on my past in silence, the stranger sat next to me. "What ahs got you down?" he inquired in a rather refreshing, rusty british accent. He was the type of man whom you can become friends with within 5 minutes. Or so I thought.

We passed the time for quite some time, when I realized I have not had a proper glance at this stranger. As I sat to face him, I somehow fell backwards into the icy waters of the fountain. But that is the thing: the fountain was no longer a fountain, the icy cold water belonged to that of a gargantuan lake. I swam up to catch my breath, and that's when i saw the stranger on the raft, eating what looked like a...human arm. I disregarded this as a notion that my mind must be playing cruel tricks on me. As I continued to gasp for breath, the stranger reached the human arm out, and I scrabbled for it. I finally got a hold, and the stranger pulled me onto the raft and out of the freezing waters.

I sat crossed legged accross from the stranger, and no matter how hard I squinted my eyes, I can only see a faint sillouette of a man. And that's when I closed my eyes, but they opened. And there I was, sitting at the fountain, an old man smiling cynically besides me. From that point on, I only remember one thing the old man said: "How was the other side, and would you like to see more?" After about a few moments of incredulous silence on my part, i shakily got to my feet, and sensibely walked home, as if I was pushed across black squares like a pawn in a chess game. That night, when I went to sleep, I died, with the old man at the foot of my bed.
