KyledaGreat:

Actually, Churchill replaced Neville Chamberlain as Britain's Prime Minister shortly after the outbreak of World War II, not after the war began. Chamberlain, who had been Prime Minister since 1937, was criticized for his policy of appeasement towards Nazi Germany in the lead-up to the war, which many felt had failed to prevent the outbreak of hostilities. When Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, Britain and France issued an ultimatum to Germany to withdraw its forces, but it was ignored. On September 3, 1939, Britain declared war on Germany. Chamberlain's popularity quickly declined, and he faced criticism from both the opposition and members of his own party for his handling of the crisis. On May 10, 1940, after the German invasion of Denmark and Norway, the British Parliament lost confidence in Chamberlain's leadership, and he resigned as Prime Minister. Winston Churchill, who had been a vocal critic of Chamberlain's appeasement policy, was appointed as his successor. Churchill's strong leadership and inspiring speeches helped rally the British people during the difficult early years of the war.
