Functions are normally notated as something like f(x) but we can see that we are replace the "x" with -2. So, f(-2) is the value of the function when x = -2. The next part is where you are trying to find the value of "x" where the function f(x) = -5. You can determine these values by looking at the graph of the function. If you look closely, the y-value (along the vertical y-axis) is where you should find the -5 and the x-value (along the x-axis) will correspond to that y-value on the graphed function which is a parabola.
