Should we still teach To Kill A Mockingbird?

SoundwaveKun:

Or, rather, schools?

Trickjoker:

I've never really read it. What's the whole plot behind it?

Here's the entirety of it from Google: "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a classic novel written by Harper Lee, published in 1960. The story is set in the racially segregated American South during the 1930s and focuses on themes of racial injustice, morality, and the loss of innocence. The narrative is primarily seen through the eyes of Scout Finch, a young girl, and her brother Jem, as they witness the complexities of their society. Key aspects of the novel include: Racial Injustice: The novel addresses the deep-seated racism and prejudice prevalent in the southern United States during this period. It centers on the trial of Tom Robinson, a Black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, Mayella Ewell. Morality and Empathy: The character of Atticus Finch, Scout and Jem's father, serves as a moral compass in the story. He defends Tom Robinson in court despite facing societal pressure, highlighting themes of empathy and the importance of doing what is right. Loss of Innocence: As Scout and Jem grow up, they become more aware of the harsh realities of their community, leading to a loss of their childhood innocence. Social Commentary: "To Kill a Mockingbird" provides a profound social commentary on racism, injustice, and the complexities of human nature.

That's a whole @ss red flag right there.

zombieblud:

it should be taught in history and not english considering it's more historical. We read it in school and I had a black teacher and she read the n word. Other students began to think it was okay so in my opinion, it shouldn't be taught in school
