Coyote:

Enzymes are types of proteins that function as catalysts. Catalysts are substances that speed up the rate of reaction between substances. What might happen to the reaction if lactase was not working properly?

Joe348:

If "lactose", the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose, is not working properly, the reaction between lactose and other substances would slow down or even come to a halt. This could lead to lactose intolerance, where the body is unable to properly digest lactose, resulting in digestive discomfort and symptoms such as bloating, gas, and diarrhea.

Coyote:

Thank you. I thought that it would completely stop it but wasn't sure, so thanks for clarifying.

Joe348:

Ofc :)
