In the year 1819, the United States of America experienced a shift in the political balance between slave and free states. This was due to the application of Missouri for statehood as a slave state. The decision was met with a lot of controversy and raised concerns about the expansion of slavery into new territories. This further fueled the tensions between Northern and Southern states, who held opposing views on the issue of slavery. The controversy ultimately led to the Missouri Compromise, which was a legislative agreement that aimed to maintain the balance of free and slave states in the US Senate. Under this agreement, Maine was admitted as a free state while Missouri was admitted as a slave state. The Missouri Compromise also established a boundary line at the 36°30′ parallel, which prohibited slavery in the northern portion of the Louisiana Territory except for Missouri. This compromise helped to temporarily ease the tensions between the North and South, but it was ultimately undone by the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which further fueled the debate over the expansion of slavery.
