A common example of active directory is when a user signs into a computer that is part of windows domain. Active Directory checks the credentials against the database, and determines the user's role and permissions

Think of it like a phonebook for a large organization. In this phonebook, you can find the names, phone numbers, and addresses of all the employees. Similarly, in Active Directory, you can find information like usernames, passwords, and permissions for all the users and computers in a network.

poopoopeepee:

When organizations get large enough, management of computers becomes a hassle. Computing resources need dedicated IT teams for management. Active directory allows management of networked resources including but not limited to user permissions and security (which computers get access to what computers and other resources such as network drives). The key point is that administrators can do so remotely, instead of needing physical presence, so long as the computer or users to be managed are part of the Active Directory setup in question.

OLIVER69:

The exclusive directory system from Microsoft is called Active Directory (AD). Administrators can control access across network resources and permissions with it. It operates on Windows Server. Data is stored as objects in Active Directory. A single element, such as a person, group, program, or printer, is called an object.
