Chapter 1: The Big Move Lily sat in the backseat of her father’s car, her face pressed against the cool glass of the window. The scenery outside flew by in a blur of greens and blues, but Lily’s mind was elsewhere. Today was the day she was moving into her new home, a place she had visited only a handful of times. Her father, James, had remarried six months ago, and now Lily was to live with him and her stepmother, Evelyn. The move had been inevitable. Her mother had passed away two years ago, and since then, Lily had lived with her grandparents. But now, they were moving to a retirement community, and Lily’s father had insisted she come live with him. Evelyn, too, had been enthusiastic, promising Lily that they would have a great time together and that she would do everything to make her feel at home. As the car pulled into the driveway of the two-story house, Lily felt a mix of excitement and anxiety. The house was charming, with a white picket fence, a blooming garden, and a porch swing that swayed gently in the breeze. Evelyn stood on the porch, waving energetically as they approached. Her warm smile was infectious, and Lily found herself smiling back, despite her nerves. “Welcome home, Lily!” Evelyn greeted, pulling Lily into a gentle hug as she stepped out of the car. “We’ve been waiting for you. Come on, let’s get your things inside.” Lily nodded, her voice caught in her throat. She followed her father and Evelyn into the house, taking in the cozy living room, the well-equipped kitchen, and finally, her new bedroom. It was clear Evelyn had put a lot of thought into making it special. The walls were painted a soft lavender, Lily’s favorite color, and the bed was covered in a quilt that looked handmade. “What do you think?” Evelyn asked, her eyes shining with hope. “It’s beautiful,” Lily managed to say, feeling a lump form in her throat. “Thank you, Evelyn.” Evelyn’s face lit up with relief. “I’m so glad you like it. I want you to feel at home here, Lily. If there’s anything you need, anything at all, just let me know.” Lily nodded again, feeling a little more at ease. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad after all.
