BAM! I woke up to a loud noise in my room. Colorful confetti was falling everywhere. My whole family was singing a happy birthday song, holding a cake with 17 lighted candles. My sister Jazzlyn, a few years younger than me, was hopping on the bed while recording everything. I sat up, smiling and blowing out the candles before they finished singing. That’s me, November. I grabbed the cake and took a large bite from the side. “NOVA!” my mom called out. The rest of my family laughed. My name is November because I was born in November. My friends and family call me Nova. This is a great beginning to the age of 17. I have big plans and will work hard to reach 18 next year. I jumped off the bed, and my siblings hugged me. My father and mother glanced at each other, their eyes sparkling. I noticed this, but it was always difficult to read their expressions. “Anyways,” my mother smiled and took the cake out of my hands. “Hurry up, kids. We’ll have a quick breakfast, and then Dad will drop you all at school.” My siblings left my room, leaving my parents and me alone. “So? Aren’t you excited to find out who your soulmate is?” I remembered this right away. When a person turns 17, they receive blue initials above their belly button. This marks the beginning of finding their soulmate. My parents had it too and had already found each other. I lifted my shirt to see my stomach and stared in disappointment. It showed A.L. I stared in disbelief. “Mom!” I felt like crying. “What about Sam?” My mother sighed long and looked over at Dad. “It’s okay, it’s just the beginning!” She tried to calm me. “I had the same thing too until I found your dad. Now it’s happily ever after. You don’t need to look for him all the time. Fate will bring him someday.” “But what will I tell Sam? He has my initials!” I couldn’t stop. “Maybe it’s someone else!” Dad shrugged. “I love him, Mom. What if he breaks up with me?” I was desperate to find a way out. “Sweetie, it’s your birthday! Why don’t you forget about the initials for now?” My mother tried to hug me. “You’re 17 years old! You now have more opportunities. Don’t get too worked up. And you should tell Sam about it. If he really loves you, he won’t let go!” I looked up at my mother and noticed she was trying not to smile. Yes, my mother was against me dating Sam. I put on my slippers and walked downstairs to eat the cake. Don’t show your disappointment in front of them, I thought to myself and smiled really big.
