That, as a number one rule of cybersecurity, is the first thing you should be doing. However, are you absolutely sure this person has been hacked? If you don't, I suggest having proof that they've been hacked before proceeding with this.

Alright. So if their email is still linked to their account, I suggest finding the "Forgot Password" button on the website. This should prompt the user to enter their email to reset their password via email.

what if say perchance the *freind's* account has been hacked to the point where some Russian fools changed the email and he can't get a reset email.

Russian fools? Sounds like he was messing with the wrong party... however, if this social media site was anywhere near secure, it should've asked for a verification code from the original email to change default email addresses on their account. If that happened, your friend should find the email within their account and find the new email address - then possibly contact the site's support system, letting them know that the account has been stolen.
