The Lorax To be presented at the Primary School during Read Across America Week. Characters: Bird AJ Barbaloot Gabe Child/Lorax Rylan Oncellor Hayden Narrator Aiden G Introduction: RYLAN Hello everyone, I am Rylan and I will be playing the Child and the Lorax and I have a job for you guys. Whenever I say, “I am the Lorax,” I need you to say, “I speak for the trees!” Let’s practice: I am the Lorax. Thank you. Okay, let’s now listen to the others. HAYDEN Hi, I’m Hayden and today I will be playing the Onceler who sells the Thneeds which everyone, everyone needs. (AJ and Rylan- thumbs down) AIDEN Hey guys. Let’s calm down, he’s not actually the Oncelor! He’s just playing the part. It’s alright to have those feelings, but let’s just keep it to ourselves. Gabe: Hello, fellow humans! My name is Gabe and I will be playing the Barbaloot! The barbaloot in a barbaloot suit! Anytime you see me on stage, dance with me, but stay seated. Let’s practice. Great dancing! We have more people to meet so let’s listen. AJ: My name is AJ. I’m playing the part of a smomee-swan. I flap my arms and squawk when I start flapping my hands. I need you guys to flap your hands and make sure not to hit the person next to you. Great job! Let’s introduce the narrator. Aiden: Hello, my name is Aiden and I am this story’s narrator. I will help you with the storytelling. Let’s stay seated and quiet. The story is about to begin. Gabe: At the far end of town where the Grickle-grass grows and the wind smells slow-and-sour when it blows and no birds ever sing excepting old crows... is the Street of the Lifted Lorax. Hayden: And deep in the Grickle-grass, some people say, if you look deep enough you can still see, today, where the Lorax once stood just as long as it could before somebody lifted the Lorax away. Rylan: What was the Lorax? And why was it there? Aiden: And why was it lifted and taken somewhere from the far end of town where the Grickle-grass grows? AJ: The old Once-ler still lives here. Ask him he know’s Child Excuse me? Are you the Oncelor? I'm looking to learn about the Lorax and the trees. I can pay Oncelor You can pay you say? Here put it all in this pail (puts pail out the window) Child (puts payment in) Here you go Oncelor (pulls in pail and counts payment) Alrighty kid I'll tell you the tale of how the lorax got lifted away. It all started way back such a long long time back…. People not currently acting (pull stuff that makes it look dilapidated off stage pull on trees) Narrator Way back in the days when the grass was still green and the pond was still wet and the clouds were still clean, and the song of the Swomee-Swans rang out in space... one morning, The Oncelor came to this glorious place. And he first saw the trees! The Truffula Trees! The bright-colored tufts of the Truffula Trees! And under the trees, he saw Brown Bar-ba-loots frisking about and eating Truffula Fruits. Oncelor These trees! These Truffula trees! All my life I've been searching for trees such as these. (picks tuft off the tree) This tuft is so soft. (Pulls a tuft to face) Narrator The Oncelor felt a great leaping of joy in his heart. He knew just what he’d do! He chopped down a Truffula Tree with one mighty chop. With great speedy speed, he took the soft tuft. And knitted a Thneed! The instant The Oncelor finished he heard a ga-Zump! He looked and saw something pop out of the stump. It was sort of a man. Describe him?...That's hard. I don't know if I can. He was shortish, and oldish, loudish and bossy. Lorax Mister! I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs if you please.-- What's that THING you've made out of my Truffula tuft? The Oncelor Look, Lorax. There's no cause for alarm. I chopped just one tree. I am doing no harm. I'm being quite useful. This thing is a Thneed. A Thneed's a Fine-Something-That-All-People-Need! It’s a shirt. It's a sock. It's a glove. It's a hat. But it has other uses. Yes, far beyond that. Lorax Sir! You are crazy with greed. There is no one on earth who would buy that fool Thneed! Narrator But the very next minute he proved the Lorax wrong. For, just at that minute, a man came along, That things great. He happily bought it for three ninety-eight. Oncelor You poor silly guy! You never can tell what some people will buy. Lorax I repeat! I speak for the trees! Oncelor I'm busy. Hush, if you please Narrator And, in no time at all, the factory he built, was working full tilt. He was knitting Thneed’s just as busy as bees, to the sound of the chopping of Truffula Trees. Then... Oh! Baby! Oh! How his business did grow! Now, chopping one tree at a time was too slow. His four chopped four all in one go. He was making Thneed’s four times as fast as before! And that Lorax?... He didn't show up any more. But the next week he knocked on The Oncelors new office door. Lorax I'm the Lorax who speaks for the trees, which you seem to be chopping as fast as you please. But I'm also in charge of the Brown Bar-ba-loots, who happily lived, eating Truffula Fruits. But now… Barbaloot Mr Oncelor there's not enough food. Thanks to you cutting the Truffula trees we’ve got crummies in our tummies. We loved living here. But we cannot stay. We have to find food. And I hope that we may. (Turns around and walks away dejected) Narrator The Oncelor felt sad to see them go. But business is business. And business must grow. Oncelor I mean no harm. I most truly do not But I have to grow bigger. Narrator And bigger he got. He biggered the loads of the Thneed’s he shipped out. He went right on biggering...selling more Thneed’s. And He biggered his money, which everyone needs. Then while the Oncelor went to work, the Lorax came back and went berzerk. Lorax I am the Lorax, he coughed and he whiffed. Lorax Once-ler! You're making such smogulous smoke! My poor Swomee-Swans...why, they can't sing a note! Swomee-Swans Mr Oncelor. We cant sing with all this smoke in our throats. And so (coughing) we cannot live here. We may have to fly far and long. To find somewhere to sing our song. (Starts “flying” away) Lorax It’s all your fault that everyone must go. The swans have left, it’s your fault you must know. Narrator The Oncelor. He got terribly mad. He yelled at the Lorax Oncelor Now listen here, Dad!(said with finger quotes) All you do is yap-yap and say, Bad! Bad! Bad! Well, I have my rights, sir. And, for your information, you Lorax, I'm figguring on biggering and Biggering and BIGGERING and BIGGERING!! Turning MORE Truffula Trees into Thneed’s which everyone, EVERYONE, EVERYONE needs! Narrator And at that very moment, they heard a loud whack! From outside in the fields came a sickening smack of an axe on a tree. Then they heard the tree fall. The very last Truffula Tree of them all! No more trees. No more Thneed’s. No more work to be done. Now all that was left beneath the bad-smelling sky was his big empty factory... the Lorax... and that Oncelor guy. Narrator The Lorax said nothing. Just gave him a glance... just gave him a very sad, sad backward glance... as he lifted himself by the seat of his pants. (back to future) Oncelor And I'll never forget the grim look on his face when he hoisted himself and took leave of this place, through a hole in the smog, without leaving a trace. And all that the Lorax left here in this mess was a small pile of rocks, with one word... UNLESS. Whatever that meant, well, I just couldn't guess. That was long, long ago. But each day since that day I've sat here and worried and worried away. Through the years, while my buildings have fallen apart, I've worried about it with all of my heart. Oncelor But now, says the Once-ler, Now that you're here, the word of the Lorax seems perfectly clear. UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not. So catch (Drops seed) It's a Truffula Seed. It's the last one of all! You're in charge of the last of the Truffula Seeds. And Truffula Trees are what everyone needs. Plant a new Truffula. Put it in the ground. Water it and give it sunlight. Grow a forest. Protect it from axes that hack. Then the Lorax and all of his friends may come back.
