yep - I know she was the first American woman in space but I don't really know how that's an accomplishment that affected the world in any way.

In terms of speaking, that's still an accomplishment., especially for women. Women had to deal with hardships as is, such as getting jobs and voting rights, which became the Woman's Suffrage Act.

Think of it as this, because of Amendment 19th (thanks to Woman's Suffrage Act) laid the foundation for women’s legal equality that have encouraged access to education, including the right to attend universities and pursue careers like science and engineering (STEM) in which Ride attended and got a Bachelor Science degree in at Stanford. It also helped pave the way to encourage other women (and girls) to dream and set goals to beat stereotypes when it comes down to "that's a man's job".
