MAGABACK:

Im doing a straw rocket project rn. What makes the straw stay up for the longest possible time?

SaltySuga:

Glue

MAGABACK:

I tried that and it doesn't work

SaltySuga:

Super glue

Twaylor:

curl up paper and put it inside (might be a bit hard) it tries expanding outwards making the straw stand up better (also put a cork in at the bottom if you are trying to make it stand up)

Texasroadhouse13:

when you create the biggest pressure difference: by sealing the top with a finger (trapping low pressure inside) and ensuring the liquid inside is held up by the stronger atmospheric pressure pushing on the liquid's surface outside, with surface tension and capillary action in a very narrow straw helping to keep it from dripping, other wise Use a very narrow straw to maximize capillary action and surface tension. Ensure the top is perfectly sealed with your finger or a cap to maintain the vacuum. Keep the liquid close to the top of the straw so there's less weight to support.
