What apps and programs are we suppose to research? you come in here with a open ended questions that you should have e the information and knowledge to solve. Next time provide the proper information needed to answers you question. If you want an explanation of how to solve this,
First: Figure out what programs they will most likely be using at a college level for architecture classes.
Second: look into the requirements for that software to see what it requires and what makes it faster. (be it cpu or gpu, for example) 
Third: given its a college student, keep in mind a budget and aim for the best bang for buck system for their needs you figured out in step 1 & 2
