In today's time and age, no one really takes the time to look or understand about the actions they have, and how it affects the world around them. The amount of pollution and trash in the tropical regions of the ocean is devastating. The reptiles known as sea turtles are now endangered, and on the verge of extinction, due to the amount of pollution, and over hunting. I’m here to tell you why this happened, how it happened, and what is being done to stop it.
The problem with hunting is people don't know when to stop, thus causing animals to be endangered or extinct. That is one of the leading causes in sea turtle extinction, overhunting. “Human threats far outweigh natural threats to sea turtles” as said by the Olive Ridley Project. Sea turtles are often hunted for their meat and shells. Their shell is hunted for because of the extensive and beautiful jewelry that can be made from it. The most commonly hunted turtle for its shell would be the Hawksbill turtle. These shells, also known as Tortoiseshell, can be sold for very high value in most places. The reason most turtles are also hunted is for their meat. Which is advised against because it often contains many diseases, such as, salmonella, mycobacteria, leptospires, other bacteria, parasites, or other heavy metals and pesticides. However their meat is hunted because it is a good eating, despite the many dangerous diseases you can contract. Sea turtle meat is also hunted and used for religious practice in some countries. It is used for where a pregnant woman drinks the blood and eats the meat, which keeps its baby protected from evil spirits. Another reason sea turtles are hunted is for their eggs. The eggs can be used for things such as food, and oils. One of the biggest forms of overhunting is by accident, called bycatch, its the accidental capture of non-target species in active fishing gear. This fishing gear consists of gillnets, trawls, purse seine nets, longlines, traps, and pots capture. Oftentimes when sea turtles are found to stay put in an area, that area becomes marked off as MPA (marine protected area.). MPAs are, “key tools for combatting the global overexploitation of endangered species.” (the royal society). These MPA tools have helped tremendously in protecting the endangered species.
