part two of- fading where i stand Her thumbs hovered over the screen before she typed back. Eli: yeah me too :) She hit send before she could change it. Because what else was she supposed to say? I felt invisible sitting right next to you? I kept waiting for you to notice me? I don’t think you see me anymore? Yeah. No. Eli locked her phone and set it beside her, staring at the wall.It wasn’t just tonight. It had been happening slowly… so slowly she almost didn’t notice. Her friends didn’t ask for her like they used to. Conversations happened without her. Plans were made, and sometimes more often lately she wasn’t even included until last minute. And Mike… Mike used to look at her like she was the only person in the room. Now he barely looked at her at all. Eli pulled her knees to her chest, resting her chin on them. “What’s wrong with me?” she whispered into the quiet. No answer came. Just the same heavy feeling sitting in her chest. The kind that made you question everything. The kind that made you feel like… Maybe you weren’t replaced. Maybe you were just… never enough to begin with. Chapter 2: The Space Between Words The next morning felt heavier than it should’ve. Nothing had happened, technically. No fight. No breakup. No harsh words thrown like knives. And yet, Eli woke up with that same tight feeling in her chest like something had already gone wrong before the day even started. She stared at her ceiling for a while, her phone resting beside her. No new messages. Not from Mike. Not from anyone. She rolled over, grabbing her phone anyway, thumb hovering over his name. For a second, she thought about texting him first. Good morning… I miss you… Can we hang out today? The words sat in her head, waiting. Then she locked her phone again. Because lately, it felt like she was always the one reaching first. And she was getting tired of stretching herself just to feel wanted.By the afternoon, Eli found herself scrolling through social media, half-bored, half-numb. Then she saw it. A post. Mike. With the group. At the mall. Her stomach dropped before her brain could even catch up. She sat up straighter, staring at the screen like it might change if she looked long enough. It didn’t. They were all there, laughing, posing, looking like they were having the kind of day people actually remember. Mike had his arm slung casually around someone’s shoulder, smiling wide.
