Might I suggest this: http://learnpythonthehardway.org/index The first chapter explains the title. I had gone through most of this book a few months before watching this course, as a novice to programming. Without this book I would have given up, as the classes are looking at things from a bird's-eye view, and I wouldn't have known how to practically apply the things in order to do the assignments. If you are new to programming, this is a good book. Even if the first few lessons seem stupidly easy. It ramps up pretty fast, yet covers many areas in a practical way.
