A box is made up of 6 rectangles -- 1 top, 1 bottom, and 4 sides. You find the area of each of these 6 rectangles (length x width) and add them up. That's the surface area of your box. For example, let's say your box is 11 x 12 at the base and 1 1/2 inches tall. So the base and the top are both 11 x 12. Calculate the area, then multiply by 2 (top and bottom). Do the same for the 4 sides -- two will be 11 x 1 1/2, two will be 12 x 1 1/2. Add up the six results. Done.
