can anyone help how you get the answer to 6 1/8 - 3 1/4 = 2 7/8

OpenStudy (shadowfiend):

So you can convert 3 1/4 to be in terms of eights as well, so that would be 3 2/8. Then you have 6 1/8 - 3 2/8. You can subtract the whole parts and the fractions, and you get 3 (1/8 - 2/8). Since 2/8 is greater than 1/8, it means you'll have to take one from the whole number, so you end up with 2 7/8.
