Beds set up for temporary and emergency use (for example, cots in the hall) are not included in the hospital's bed count because they are not continually staffed and available for use. Moreover, hospitals are licensed by the state for a certain number of beds, which does not include disaster needs, and so they cannot set up beds indiscriminately. PCUs are staffed (from housekeeping to nursing) according to their number of beds.

Example of unit totals:
For example, Pediatric Medicine has 55 beds and 1,450 inpatient service days in the month of April (30 days). The percentage of occupancy is therefore the inpatient service days multiplied by 100 and divided by the product of the number of beds (55) and the number of days (30) to get 87.9%.
(1,450 x 100)/(55 x 30) = 87.9 = 145,000/1,650 = 87.87% = 87.9%
Total: 87.8%
To find the total, add the inpatient service days for each of the units to get 5,265. Multiply that by 100 and divide by the product of the total number of beds (200) and the number of days (30).
(5,265 x 100)/(200 x 30) = 526,500/6,000 = 87.75 = 87.8%
Exercise 4.4
Community Hospital began the year 20XX, a non-leap year, with 102 beds. By March 1st, it had expanded the number of beds to 116. In April through June, the hospital reported 120 beds, which increased to 124 beds in July through October. Finally, the hospital completed its expansion process in November to end the year with 130 beds. Use these data to answer the questions below. Round to one decimal place.

For example, in the first quarter, add the inpatient service days for the first 3 months together, multiply by 100, and divide by the sum of the product of beds and days in the month for each month to get 90.3%
