Select the set of equations that represents the following situation: The sum of two numbers is 38, and their difference is twenty-six more than the smaller number. What are the two numbers? x + y = 38; y – x = x + 26 2x = 38; 61 = x + 26 2y = 38; 61 = x – 26 x + y = 38; x – y = 26 – x

first one........

Use the first set of equations, express the first equation in terms of x or y as a independent variable. Substitute that into the second equation in the set and solve for x or y depending which you used.

If you're not used to the substitution method check Moss's Brother's explanation for buzzlighter's question.
