Well, you need money. Most of facebook has PHP and other languages (html and javscript)

it was all in the marketing. the harvard.edu exclusivity feature was what made it. Everyone at harvard felt special that only they could. And since Harvard is the most sought-after name, the Ivy Leagues would soon follow suit, thinking they were part of the exclusive club that is the Ivy Leagues. And then all the 2nd and 3rd-tier schools wanted to join the Elite. If you can market to the top dogs for anything and get them to use your product, then they will lead the rest of the way to get more users. Also, you need a simple, initial product like Facebook initially was.
