CAN SOMEONE PLEAAAAAAASE EXPLAIN THIS Alexei wants to hang a mirror in his boat but the mirror and frame must not have an area larger than 19.25 square feet. The mirror is 3 feet wide and 5 feet long. Which quadratic equation represents the area of the mirror and frame combined? (The border must have equal width on each side.)

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

Let the width of frame be x, so on either side of mirror there is x ft of frame making entire mirror/frame with (3+2x) wide and (5+2x) long................Area of mirror/frame is (3+2x)*(5+2x) which equals 19.25.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So I get (3+2x)(5+2x)=19.25 and all I have to do is solve it right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, but you are going to have to use the quadratic formula.

OpenStudy (dumbcow):

yes..distribute or FOIL, then set equal to zero, then use quadratic formula
