When you order a series from least to greatest (left to right), you can then pick the median.  If you look at the part of the series that's to the left of the median, you can divide that part of the series in two (in effect, picking the median of the part of the series that's to the left of the median).  This "median of a median" is your first quartile!

The first arrow is the first quartile.  The big arrow in the middle is the median.  Yes Gir, it's very closely related to the box-and-whisker plot.  The first and third quartile are the boundaries of the box.
