(a-m)(b-m)(c-m)...................(x-m)(y-m)(z-m) =?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wat type of math??????

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i suppose its multiplication !!!!! just try it!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i suposse u want us to substtue the letters with ##??

OpenStudy (jamesj):

This is a cute problem.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no just go ahead !!! i know the ans but i want you guys to try it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jamesj : thnx

OpenStudy (jamesj):

It's a generalization of this example shows that shows what's going on: (x-m)(y-m)(z-m) = xyz - m (xy + yz + xz) + m^2 (x + y + z) - m^3 So the first term is abcde...z the second term, or coefficient of m is the sum of the product a to z, each time with a letter missing the next term, the coefficient of m^2, is the sum of the product of a to z with two letters missing etc. Now just layer on sign changes each time.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but i want the final ans!!!

OpenStudy (jamesj):

it's too long to write out explicitly.

OpenStudy (jamesj):

Although .... as m - m = 0, the answer is zero!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but its tooooooooooooo short!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jamesj: u r correct!!!!!!!!!

jhonyy9 (jhonyy9):

so from the first 3 terms we get (ab-am-bm+m2)(c-m) abc-acm-bcm+cm2-abm+am2+bm2-m3 abc-m(ab+ac+bc)+m2(a+b+c)-m3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer is zero

OpenStudy (anonymous):

m-m = 0
