find the derivative: x/e^x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(e^x-xintoe^x)/e^2x

OpenStudy (lalaly):

using the product rule \[\frac{d}{dx}xe^{-x} = e^{-x}-xe^{-x} = \frac{1}{e^x}- \frac{x}{e^x}\]

qutotient rule

OpenStudy (lalaly):

i used the product rule,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that is not what I got, I got 1-x/e^x is the derivative

OpenStudy (lalaly):

well thats the same as my answer

OpenStudy (lalaly):

\[\frac{1}{e^x}-\frac{x}{e^x} = \frac{1-x}{e^x}\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right lalaly you are right you just didn't eliminate the common term

OpenStudy (lalaly):

what common term? i dont have to eliminate anything

OpenStudy (lalaly):

its exactly the same since they have a common denomiantor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

e^x over e^x2 simplifies to your 2nd answer of 1-x/e^x

OpenStudy (lalaly):

sumbul used the quotient rule i used the product rule so my answer was simplified from the beginning i did not get e^2x.... i did it a different way...so u can have to methods of doing it
